Yes, New Zealand is that big! In just over three weeks in September and October 2007 I have driven 6800 km around both islands, showing New Zealand to three mates from Russia, who came to Aotearoa for cycling holidays. Well, they had their bit of cyclimg circumnavigating Lake Taupo and MtRuapehu in 6 days, whereas I had to come back to work, not be able to allow myself that long holiday. So for me it was sort of car driving holiday, with several short bike rides, day walks, mountain tramp into the waist deep snow terrain, and bit of kayaking. On our way we saw almost everything New Zealand has to offer - beaches, fiords, snow covered mountains, freshly erupted volcano, rain forest, alpine desert, beautiful lakes and rivers, wildlife, cities and countryside. The spring was unfolding in all its beaty, with bare trees' branches getting new leaves day after day. The weather was very typical - sunny warm days followed bitterly cold nights, with water pouring down endlessly in some places for several days.
Да, да, Новая Зеландия - не такая уж маленькая страна, как можно подумать, глядя на карту мира. По крайне мере, проехать 6800 км за три недели по обоим островам не составило никакой проблемы. В этот раз я выступал на добровольных началах гидом для трех туристов из России, которые приехали в Новую Зеландию, чтобы активно провести свой отпуск. Мне, к сожалению, в связи с производственной необходимостью не удалось в полной мере насладиться велосипедной частью этого путешествия (6 дней вокруг озера Таупо и вулкана Руапеху), задуманного мной именно как велосипедные каникулы. Но в остальном все было замечательно - несколько коротких покатушек и пеших прогулок, один горный поход, сложившийся довольно экстремально, пещеры, байдарки, ну и все разнообразие новозеландской природы и погоды, котороая в это весеннее время радовала нас то солнечными теплыми днями, то затяжными периодами дождей.
